Antique 1898 Nautical Stereoview; Identification on image, "Lieut. Richmond Pearson Hobson--the hero of the 'Merrimac'". Copyright 1898 by Strohmeyer & Wyman of NYC. During the Spanish American War, Hobson took command of the Merrimac in an attempt to sink her and obstruct the channel. He was captured as a prisoner of war in Cuba. Hobson was made a hero by the American press. In 1898, he was released during a prisoner exchange. Photographic stereoview is mounted on slightly curved mount board which is about 7" x 3-1/2".
